Video Games: Good or Bad? The battle of researchers, depicting whether video games are beneficial or detrimental to children seems to be a new but ongoing argument. With advances in technology and the overwhelming effect of video game entertainment, whether on a computer, video game system, or hand-held device, it is increasingly difficult for parents to monitor their children while occupying their time playing these games. There is more negative research versus positive especially since the topic is just now being researched by psychiatrists, medical personnel, and educationists. Most of the information found on the internet and in publications is starting to take a turn for the positive due to the change in programming and game†¦show more content†¦This leads to children becoming addicted to the gameplay and unable to refrain from thinking of playing, even while in school (Prot, McDonald, Anderson, Gentile, 2012, p.651). These negative effects have a major impact in both males and females bet ween the ages of seven and ten years (Nauert). It is essential to understand and identify the current research pertaining to video games in order to see a different direction. Video games have become a major part of society thanks to the growths in technology; both hardware and software-based. With the convenience of being able to play games on a hand-held device they can be played at any time by any person. That being said, it is even more difficult now for parents to monitor their children with these advancements. However, new research is showing that as children continue to play games appropriate for their age range they have seen new growth in several areas of the brain. According to the Pediatric Clinics of North America, several positive effects of playing age-appropriate video games include improved visual and spatial skills, specific skills and knowledge from educational games, physical activity increase thanks to devices like the Kinect from Microsoft Corporation, and games to improve social behaviors of empathy, as sisting others, and a decrease in aggression (Prot, McDonald, Anderson, Gentile, 2012, p. 648).
